How to have more faith in yourself?

"Everything comes to us, that belongs to us, if we create the capacity to receive it!”- Rabindranath Tagore

You come across some words, that inspire you and then you come across some words that change the way you think. This simple but wise quote, by the poetic, Rabindranath Tagore, teaches us something we often fail to understand.

I want to share a small incident with you, which I encountered with one of my clients. She is a sweet lady, dealing with a lot of stressful situations. She once told me, “I want people to take me seriously, I want them to respect me and give me the importance I need!”

I was happy thinking that she finally has started understanding “her” worth and finally has learnt to appreciate herself! I paused and allowed her to sink in the words she had just spoken out load, but she quickly added saying, “But why will they give me importance and respect? I mean, I am nobody!”

This how most of us think. We want things but we don’t feel we have the capacity to have it all! How many of us have seen a pretty bag or an amazing watch and said to ourselves, “Man! That is expensive I can never afford it!” I have, many many times! And I would always get a sinking feeling about me. I would feel small and useless.

But what exactly do we mean when we say we “cannot” have it? Are we saying we never will? Or are we saying we want it but we feel inferior to people who have it “right now” and therefore we will never own it?

It is later in my life that I realized, when I say I cannot ever get what I want, I am shielding that thought with a strong negative emotion! But, when I rephrase it and say, I cannot afford it but someday I might just own it, I give myself this hope and it gives me a thrill and a positive vibe.

We want love, but we feel we don’t deserve it or need it. We want beautiful clothes but we don’t say it out loud because we cannot afford it at this moment. We want to get admitted in an institution but we are scared because we feel we are too dumb to get it. We want a dream job and then we fail because there are others who might just be fit for it. We want to start a new venture but we don’t because we are afraid it may not work!

Sometimes we are too afraid to say what we really want, because we feel scared of judgment. Then there is self-esteem that plays a major role in your life, whether you want to win an award or whether you want to buy a pair of socks.

Like this wise quote, by Rabindranath Tagore, I have always believed that if we are to receive something that belongs to, it creates a desire within us, a need to posses it and own it. And we do own it, if we create the power of acceptance within us. Acceptance that, Yes! We truly deserve it and want it.

And so, I conclude, hoping that you too, will learn the art of acceptance –

“Believe in the power of you, to create what you desire and it will belong to you”!
